The management and control of complex processes of modern industry require sophisticated tools for real-time management of several integrated processes (like production planning, process control, safety, clean production, among others). This complex integration incorporates other types of knowledge that add to the handling of software tools. Most notable among these is the domain of manufacturing processes, management systems, information systems (databases included), mechanical, electrical and electronics technology, sensors and actuators, and computer networks. The integrated area of these diverse technologies is what you might call Mechatronic Systems. Or, more formally accepts a definition: "the synergistic integration of precision mechanical engineering with electronics and intelligent computer control in order to design processes and manufacturing." This definition is virtually coincident with that taken by the Advisory Committee for Industrial Research and Development of the European Community (IRDAC): Mechatronics is the synergistic integration of mechanical engineering with electronics and intelligent computer control in the design and manufacture of products and processes. Mechatronics, then, is an integrative discipline that uses the technologies of mechanics, electronics and information technology to provide products, systems and processes improved.
